Pigmentation means colour, and the colour of the skin is affected in this condition. Melanin is the pigment that gives the skin its colour and is produced by melanocyte cells under the skin. The production of melanin is disrupted when these cells are damaged and can lead to patches on the skin. Hyperpigmentation can result from excessive melanin synthesis. It is a harmless skin disorder where the patches of skin become darker in colour than the surrounding healthy skin.
