The John L. Cotter Award for Excellence in NPS Archeology for Professional Achievement has been given to Apostle Islands National Lakeshore archeologist and Cultural Resource Manager David J. Cooper.

According to an article published by the National Park Service (NPS), the Cotter Award has two categories. Those who have worked for NPS for a long time are awarded in the Professional Achievement category. Individuals or teams that complete work on aquatic or terrestrial archaeological resources over multiple years or for a single, fixed-year activity are recognized in the Project Achievement category.
