To foresee lightning's descent and catch it before any other object enters its protective region, the ESE air terminal continuously discharges an upward leader at the moment of the advance. The protective radius of the ESE air terminal is determined by the ESE's duration of passage; the more foresight the rising leader has, the higher the descending leader is captured, and the bigger the area over which lightning strikes are prevented.
