The MOC3021 is a TRIAC ZeroCrossing Optocoupler or Optocoupler. As we know, the term optocoupler / optocoupler means the same thing that we use light to indirectly couple to sets of circuits. The particularity of the MOC3021 is that it has a ZeroCrossing capability and that it is piloted by a Triac.

Since the output is driven by a TRIAC, we can drive loads up to 400V and the triac can drive in either direction, so controlling the AC loads will not be a problem. Also, since it has the ability to go through zero, when the AC load is first turned on, the TRIAC will not start driving until the AC wave reaches 0 V.
