In memory of the late Dr.Jai Chand Chavan, one of the most versatile physicians in the old city who practised for over 35 years, Chavan hospitals were founded in 1978 by his second generation of doctors (Dr.Uday Chavan and Dr.Vinay Chavan) to provide tertiary health care at an affordable cost, even for lower-middle-class people, without compromising care quality.
